Recycling at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium

HILLIARD, Ohio (Apr. 14, 2020) You’ve heard the saying, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure?” That couldn’t be truer when it comes to recycling! At ADS, we are committed to reducing plastic waste and supporting a circular economy. And we’re not the only ones dedicated to these efforts. The Ohio By-Product Synergy Network (OBS) is a program focused on connecting businesses to find synergies where one companies waste stream can be another company’s supply stream. Through our involvement with OBS, we connected with the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. The team at the zoo was planning on replacing some of their picnic tables and benches. Like ADS, the zoo is also passionate about sustainability, and has a team in place dedicated to implementing programs to reduced their environmental footprint. They didn’t want to ship these items to a landfill. They wanted to find a way to recycle the plastic. We were able to take the material and convert it into drainage pipe that will be used for stormwater management. In total, 3000 pounds of plastic avoided the landfill and was recycled into products with a 50 - 100 year service life.

We were honored to work with the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. We look forward to continuing our partnership with them and finding new opportunities with other companies based in Ohio and across North America.
